Step One: Getting to know the Durston bangle maker

The Durston bangle maker is designed to help you produce cuff-like bangles accurately and with ease. It features:

• Three pairs of dies (one flat and straight pair, one curved pair, and one combination pair)
• A carrier rod that can be used in any jewellery workbench vice
• A forming mallet specifically designed to make bangle making simple

The best way to get to know the Durston bangle maker is simply to practice using it – make sure you use some cheap scrap metal that you’re happy to test on. That way you can get to know the dies that you prefer to use and what effect they will create.

Step Two: Getting started

Choose the die you’d like to use and your chosen metal strip. Remember that your dies work in pairs, and you’ll need to use the larger die first, before moving onto the smaller one of the pair.

Place your chosen die onto the carrier rod and start to manipulate the metal strip around the die using your hands. Once it’s loosely wrapped around the die you can then move onto forming the exact shape required.

Step Three: Forming the bangle

With a loose grip on the bottom of the bangle, take the forming mallet and gently hammer the metal strip in a downward motion, swivelling the die around the carrier rod as you go. It’s important to note that it will take a little more force and a little more time to get the right shape when you use a concave die to form curved metal bangles. Once you’ve hammered the entire metal strip using the larger die, you can move onto the smaller die in your pair.

Step Four: Getting handmade bangles just right

Take the rounded metal strip off the larger die and replace the larger die with the smaller of the pair. Now place the rounded metal strip back onto the smaller die and start the hammering process again. Use your fingers to further ease the metal bangle around the smaller die. Once in place, take your mallet and hammer the bangle in a downward motion so that you create an accurate curve of your handmade bangle.
